A General Discussion on DB9 Connectors

Today’s world is completely dependent on computers and machines. Everything that we use is either electronic gadgets, or computer peripherals. All of these are required to connect with our computers in some way. We must need to do a bit of programming, or use software, but, we also need a firmware, which is essentially a DB9 connector. Although we have lots of other ways to connect a computer with another peripheral device, a DB9 connector is one of the most sought after ways to connect such devices. As its name implies, a DB9 connector has 9 hosting ports attached with it.

Generally, if you need to see for you how a DB9 connector looks like, you can find them at the backside of your computer’s CPU. There you will see different types of connecting points which are used to connect the different devices with your computer. The most common devices that use a DB9 connector to connect it with the computers are keyboards, mouse, LCD screens or monitors, gaming devices, printers etc. The most important advantage of such a DB9 connector is that, it lets you to connect and integrate the device with your computer quickly and easily. Each of the devices that you buy from the market, or stores is generally supplied with a program or software along with the user manual. The manual helps you to successfully connect the device with your computer. The program, or software provided by the manufacturer, gives commands to the connector to forward and receive data to the device. But, when you are making the device by yourself, then you have to buy a DB9 connector and then design a software, or program in order to successfully integrate that device.

DB9 Connector

The structure and configuration of a DB9 connector is comparatively easy. As its name suggests, the DB9 connector has 9 pins arranged in two different rows. One row is placed just on top of the other. The lower row has 4 pins whereas the top row has 5 pins. The DB9 connectors are of two types. The first of them is a male connector, which has the pin contacts. The second type containing the socket connectors are called female connectors or socket. Generally, the computers are equipped with DB9 male connectors and the peripheral devices are equipped with a female DB9 connector. In order to connect them, one must plug the female socket DB9 tightly into the male DB9 connector.

These connectors are frequently used for RS-232 serial interfaces or applications. Internally, each of the connecting cable of such a DB9 connector has 9 wires inside it, which are used to connect and exchange commands and data between the computer and the peripheral device. Due to the complex nature of the design, these widely used DB9 connectors are comparably more expensive, than other ports and connectors like different types of USB ports. Also, the data exchange rate is slower than modern ports. So DB9 connectors are losing its popularity rapidly in today’s computer manufacturing industry.

A Brief Discussion on Pin Configurations of A DB9 Connector

The DB9 connector, originally called a DE9 connector, is an analog 9 pin plug connector of the D-subminiature (D-sub or sub-D) family. These types of connectors are primarily used for serial connections, thus allowing it to transmit data as provided for by standard RS-232 or RS-232C applications. A DB9 connector features two parallel rows of … Continue reading

Uses of DB9 Connectors in Modern Computing

The DB9 connector is a very popular electrical connector, which is generally used to connect computers with peripheral devices. These devices are named for their classic D-shaped metal shield, which contains the pins or sockets. DB9 connector gained its popularity, mainly because it was smaller than most of the other connectors available at that time. … Continue reading
